ATABEY’s Treasure, 2022 Sticker by NiNo Alicea.
Nino writes. “ATABEY is the ancestral mother of the Taíno indigenous people of Puerto Rico. She was worshiped as a goddess of fresh water and who represents the Earth Spirit. Given the environmental challenges the people of the island have experienced in the last five years, we chose to honor her spirit and dedicate ATABEY’s Treasure to the resilient people in Puerto Rico. In making the piece solar-powered, We also hope to continue promoting climate change awareness.
ATABEY’s Treasure is a fun, solar powered, interactive installation in the shape of an oversized fish emerging from the dry lakebed of the Playa. It will be 18 feet tall x 45 feet long made of steel, aluminum and wire mesh. The body has an exterior ladder that will lead you into the mouth of the fish where you will find a tunnel slide. Sliding through and out the belly, the fish will spit you out, facing the second part of the piece, the tail.”
