Wings of the Man, 2017 Pendant by Paul Delathauwer.
Less than 15 of these were produced.
Paul Writes, “I gifted this pendant to a stranger I happened come across near the Tree of Tenere in Deep Playa. I approached her and complimented her outstanding outfit. You can tell she had a deep connection to Burning Man so I gifted her with this piece. I road off to find more adventures and see art in deep playa. On Sunday we packed up and started our return home. As soon as I got with in cell service my phone started blowing up with texts from friends saying “Have you seen the news, you are all over it” and “Your Famous”. When I had a chance to look I saw my pendant in a photograph taken by Reuters photographer Jim Urqhart. His article was shared world wide. Little did I know that that Nerd I saw in the background casually being incognito was that Reuters photographer. I did reach out to Pili after the burn and we have been close friends ever since. Each year we make the effort to visit each other, spending hours chatting and catching up. What an outstanding person Pili is.”
2017 was the first year Paul made Jewlery for the Burn. His method involved 3D and hand fabrication of pieces. Components were 3D Printed and were used to hand create different models. In house RTV molds were made and a special Brass Urethane casting coating method was developed to create a metal surface. 8 models were created for 2018 with a total production of around 200 pieces. A special gift box was made with a custom hinge to create a Jewlery Box which enhanced the gifting experience. The jewelry box also functioned as a safe transport for the piece to the default world.
Paul Delathauwer’s work is featured in several museums including the 2018 exhibit No Spectators at the Smithsonian’s Renwick Gallery in Washington D.C. He designs original art for Burning Man including installations, pendants, pins, patches and awards. Pauls work often incorporates a reliquarium where one can place something sacred or keepsake inside. A variety of items can be placed inside. A wide range of relics are kept in there from as Ashes of loved ones and Pets to Playa Dust which is the most common.
